More than tradition

The Schifferbörse – a place where the past and present join into a delightful unity. Learn what makes your stay a unique experience.

The Past

The history of the Schifferbörse finds its origin in the 13th century. Many contracts between trade merchants and ship-owners or their agents were once actually celebrated in places like the Schifferbörse. In ancient times, after all contracts were signed and registered in the town hall, the contractors went dining together as the tradition told them to.

Although times have changed, it is still common that after some hard bargaining everyone sits together and lifts a glass of wine for the sake of success.

The Present Day

The Schifferborse, the former meeting place for maritime traders, is located in the very centre of Hamburg. Its history dates back over one hundred years. The restaurant is furnished using selected pieces of original artefacts from ships, of which some are over 350 years old, showcasing Hamburg’s rich maritime history.
Those artefacts have been partly contributed by local film studios, who have used this location with its unique atmosphere for various TV productions.

The maritime atmosphere is a magnet for our regulars, tourists and business people from all over the world and as it has done for them, this atmosphere will surely take you on a journey through time from the moment you enter the Schifferbörse.

Seasonal dishes

Apart from our traditional North German cuisine we offer a selection of hand-picked seasonal dishes. From asparagus to chanterelles – There is always a seasonal speciality to your liking.
